Awards for excellence and leadership in global health research
Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking
Cash prizes recognising outstanding global-health researchers and teams from Africa and Europe for research excellence, leadership and research-capacity strengthening.
What it funds
- Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize, EUR 50,000, for outstanding achievements in advancing health research and research-capacity development in Africa
- Outstanding Research Team Prize, EUR 50,000, for collaborative teams in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe working on infectious diseases within the Global Health EDCTP3 scope
- Outstanding Female Scientist Prize, EUR 20,000, for significant scientific contribution alongside mentorship, training and leadership
- Scientific Leadership Prizes, EUR 15,000 each: one woman and one man resident in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe associated country, and one woman and one man resident in a sub-Saharan African EDCTP Association country
Eligibility
- Category-specific rules
- Select the appropriate prize first, then check the relevant Rules of Contest. Not every applicant is eligible for every category

Apply if
- You or your research team have a demonstrable record of research excellence and impact
- Your work contributes to global health or infectious-disease research relevant to the EDCTP scope
- You can demonstrate research-capacity strengthening, mentorship, collaboration or leadership where required
- You meet the residence and category rules for the specific prize

- You are looking for project funding for a new study
- You do not yet have the body of achievements required for a recognition prize
- Your work falls outside the relevant EDCTP scope
- You do not meet the category-specific residence or applicant criteria

- Supporting material evidencing the achievements claimed
- Recommendation letter or letters from at least one reputable scientist

The Methods Bench take
- Best suited for
- Researchers and teams with an established track record that can be translated into a strong evidence-backed case for impact, leadership and capacity strengthening.
- The main hurdle
- This is an achievement-based competition, not a conventional grant proposal. The application needs to show why the candidate or team stands out.
- Start early on
- Selecting the correct prize, assembling evidence of impact and securing a strong recommendation.
- Watch out for
- Category-specific eligibility. A strong candidate can still be ineligible for the wrong prize category.
