Conceptual Framework Examples That Actually Explain a Study
A good conceptual framework shows the main concepts in a study and the relationships the researcher proposes between them. It should help explain the study, not simply display every variable in boxes. In quantitative research, a framework may show hypothesized pathways between factors and an outcome. In qualitative research, it may organize the concepts or processes that guide inquiry and interpretation.

Everything points to one lonely box.
There are variables.
There are arrows.
There may still be very little framework.
What should a conceptual framework actually do?
A conceptual framework should make the study's logic visible.
It can help show:
- the central outcome or phenomenon;
- the major concepts relevant to it;
- how those concepts are related;
- which relationships are proposed;
- how the study connects to prior evidence or theory;
- how objectives, measurement and analysis fit together.
The key question is not:
“Have I included all my variables?”
It is:
“Can the reader understand why these concepts are here and why I think they relate?”
A conceptual framework is not a list of variables with arrows. It is an explanation of the study's logic.
Example 1: contraceptive service use
Suppose your objective is:
To assess factors associated with uptake of modern contraception among young women.
A weak framework might put 17 variables in separate boxes and point every one directly toward:
Modern contraceptive use
That treats all factors as independent pieces of a list.
A more useful conceptual structure could be:
Individual factors
- knowledge;
- fertility intentions;
- perceived side effects.
↓
Interpersonal factors
- partner communication;
- partner support;
- peer norms.
↓
Service-access factors
- distance;
- cost;
- method availability;
- provider attitudes.
↓
Perceived accessibility and acceptability
↓
Modern contraceptive use
Now the reader can see a proposed explanation.
The framework suggests that some individual, interpersonal and service factors may shape how accessible or acceptable contraception feels, which may in turn relate to use.
That generates methodological questions.
For example:
- Are service factors hypothesized to act directly on uptake?
- Is perceived accessibility a mediator?
- Does partner support modify another relationship?
- Are the directions of the arrows supported by evidence?
- Can a cross-sectional design test the temporal pathways implied?
A useful framework gives reviewers something meaningful to challenge.
That is a strength.
Example 2: adolescent use of youth-friendly health services
Suppose the research question is:
What influences adolescents' use of youth-friendly health services?
A multilevel framework might distinguish:
Individual level
- knowledge;
- perceived need;
- age;
- self-efficacy.
Interpersonal level
- parental attitudes;
- partner influence;
- peer norms.
Facility level
- confidentiality;
- provider attitude;
- waiting time.
Structural level
- transport;
- cost;
- policy;
- community norms.
These may influence:
Perceived acceptability + perceived accessibility
which then relate to:
Service utilization
The framework now does more than classify variables.
It says something about how levels of the environment may shape adolescents' perception of care and, ultimately, their service use.
test the arrows
Take:
Provider attitude → perceived acceptability
Ask:
Why?
Perhaps previous research suggests adolescents judge whether a service is safe partly through anticipated provider judgement.
Good.
Now take:
Age → service use
Ask:
Through what mechanism?
If the answer is simply:
“Age is a demographic variable and all demographic variables must be in a conceptual framework”
the arrow is not yet conceptually justified.
Example 3: a qualitative study of research ethics review
Conceptual frameworks are not reserved for quantitative regression models.
Suppose the question is:
How do early-career researchers experience the research ethics review process?
A qualitative conceptual framework might organize the inquiry around:
Researcher characteristics and prior experience
↓
Institutional support and mentorship
↓
Interactions with the ethics review system
↓
Perceived barriers and facilitators
↓
Adaptation and response
The concepts need not become numeric variables.
They may instead help:
- guide purposive sampling;
- inform areas for the interview guide;
- sensitize the researcher to relevant processes;
- structure later interpretation.
The degree to which a prior framework should shape analysis depends on the qualitative methodology.
A framework should guide attention without forcing every participant's experience into a predetermined box.
Example 4: a framework that distinguishes pathways rather than demographics
Suppose you are studying screening uptake.
Your evidence suggests:
Knowledge → perceived susceptibility → screening intention → screening
and separately:
Cost + distance + service availability → perceived accessibility → screening
and:
Provider recommendation → screening intention → screening
That framework is more informative than:
Age →
Income →
Education →
Knowledge →
Distance →
Provider recommendation →
Screening
The second diagram tells us what was measured.
The first begins to tell us what the researcher thinks is happening.
Bench Check: the “everything points directly to the outcome” problem
A common proposal framework looks like:
Individual factors → Outcome
Facility factors → Outcome
Community factors → Outcome
Demographic factors → Outcome
Knowledge → Outcome
Attitudes → Outcome
This may be appropriate if your conceptual position genuinely is that these domains have direct relationships with the outcome.
But often it is simply a tidy way of fitting every questionnaire section onto one page.
Ask:
- Are any concepts upstream of others?
- Are some factors mechanisms?
- Are some variables confounders rather than explanatory pathways?
- Are any arrows implying causal relationships your design cannot establish?
- Which relationships come from theory or prior research?
The ten-second test
Cover the individual variable names.
Can someone still explain the logic?
If yes, you may have a framework.
If all that remains is “many things influence outcome,” the conceptual work may not be finished.
Conceptual framework versus theoretical framework
Terminology varies across disciplines and institutions.
One useful distinction is:
Theoretical framework: explicitly foregrounds an established theory or set of theories.
Conceptual framework: may integrate theory, prior empirical research and researcher-developed relationships tailored to the particular study.
In practice, disciplines use these terms differently.
Check the conventions relevant to your field and institution.
The more important question is whether the framework genuinely helps explain and design the study.
Do conceptual frameworks need arrows?
No.
Arrows are useful when you want to communicate:
- direction;
- pathways;
- influence;
- sequence;
- feedback.
But not every conceptual structure is best represented that way.
Depending on the study, a framework might use:
- nested levels;
- domains;
- cycles;
- feedback loops;
- process stages;
- intersecting systems.
The visual form should represent the conceptual logic.
Do not force a complex system into a left-to-right arrow diagram simply because PowerPoint makes arrows easy.
What do I actually write below a conceptual framework?
A useful description explains the logic rather than narrating the shapes.
For the adolescent-service example:
The conceptual framework proposes that service utilization is shaped by factors operating at individual, interpersonal, facility and structural levels. These factors are expected to influence adolescents' perceptions of service accessibility and acceptability, which in turn relate to service use. The framework was informed by the study objectives and evidence identified in the literature and guided the selection and organization of study concepts.
If the study is cross-sectional, avoid writing as though the arrows prove causal ordering.
If the framework is qualitative, describe how it informed inquiry without implying variables were statistically tested.
How detailed should a conceptual framework be?
Detailed enough to explain the study.
Simple enough to read.
That is not the same as “include every variable.”
A framework overloaded with:
- age;
- sex;
- religion;
- marital status;
- income;
- household size;
- education;
- employment;
- knowledge;
- attitude;
- access;
- provider factors;
- community factors;
- policy factors;
- 19 arrows;
may hide the conceptual story rather than reveal it.
If a variable matters only as a routine descriptive characteristic, it may not deserve the same visual weight as a central construct.
Print or open your current framework.
For every box, answer:
- Which objective does this support?
- What evidence or theory justified including it?
- How will it be measured or explored?
- Why is it positioned here?
- What does each arrow claim?
- Can the study design examine that claim?
Then delete any arrow you cannot explain.
