How to Write Research Objectives You Can Actually Analyse
A good research objective states clearly what the study will determine, estimate, compare, assess or explore. The evidence needed to answer it should be visible from the wording. Quantitative objectives should make the outcome, population and intended estimate or relationship clear where appropriate. Qualitative objectives should identify the phenomenon or experience to be explored without pretending that everything must be measured numerically.
“To understand knowledge of family planning among students.”
Understand it how?
Estimate the proportion with adequate knowledge?
Calculate a mean knowledge score?
Compare knowledge by year of study?
Explore how students make sense of contraceptive information?
The problem is not the word “understand.”
The problem is that the objective does not yet tell us what evidence would count as an answer.
What is a research objective supposed to do?
A specific objective should translate the research question into an answerable component of the study.
It should help determine:
- what data you need;
- from whom;
- how concepts must be operationalized;
- what design is appropriate;
- what analysis will answer the objective.
WHO protocol guidance describes specific objectives as statements of the research question that should be simple, specific and stated in advance.
The crucial practical test is:
If I read the objective, can I tell what evidence would answer it?
If not, revise it.
Stop treating “SMART” as the whole lesson
SMART can be useful.
But research objectives need more than an acronym.
An objective can sound specific while still being analytically vague.
For example:
To assess family planning among university students by December 2026.
It has a population and deadline.
It still does not tell us what is being assessed.
Methods Bench focuses on a different issue:
Make the analytical or interpretive task visible.
Start with the type of question
Different verbs imply different forms of evidence.
Estimate
To estimate the proportion of undergraduate students who used a modern contraceptive method during the previous six months.
Now we can see:
- population;
- outcome;
- time frame;
- descriptive estimand.
Compare
To compare mean contraceptive-knowledge scores between first-year and final-year students.
Now we can see:
- outcome;
- groups;
- comparison.
Assess association
To assess the association between perceived confidentiality and use of university sexual and reproductive health services during the previous 12 months.
Now we can see:
- exposure/concept;
- outcome;
- relationship.
Explore
To explore how first-year students describe confidentiality concerns when deciding whether to seek sexual and reproductive health services.
Now we can see:
- qualitative phenomenon;
- population;
- decision context.
There is no requirement that every good objective produces a regression coefficient.
Qualitative objectives are analysable too.
turning a vague objective into a study
Version 1
To understand knowledge of contraception among students.
Questions immediately arise:
- Which students?
- What counts as knowledge?
- Are we estimating, comparing or exploring?
- How will the objective be answered?
Version 2
To assess knowledge of contraception among undergraduate students.
Better, but still vague.
Version 3A: descriptive quantitative
To estimate the proportion of undergraduate students who can correctly identify at least three modern contraceptive methods.
Now the evidence needed is visible.
You need:
- a defined population;
- a rule for identifying correct responses;
- a numerator;
- a denominator;
- an estimate with appropriate uncertainty.
Version 3B: comparative quantitative
To compare mean contraceptive-knowledge scores between first-year and final-year undergraduate students.
Different question.
Different analysis.
Version 3C: qualitative
To explore how undergraduate students assess the credibility of contraceptive information obtained from peers, social media and health providers.
Again, different evidence.
The broad topic did not choose the objective.
The research problem did.
Choose verbs that match the actual analytical task
Useful quantitative verbs include:
- estimate;
- determine;
- compare;
- assess;
- quantify;
- examine.
But the verb alone is not enough.
“To assess factors associated with uptake...”
can still be vague if neither the outcome nor relevant exposure domain is defined.
Useful qualitative verbs include:
- explore;
- describe;
- understand;
- examine;
- interpret.
Do not avoid “understand” as though it is forbidden.
Use it when the methodology genuinely seeks understanding, and make the phenomenon clear.
For example:
To understand how women describe the trade-offs involved in continuing a contraceptive method after experiencing side effects.
That is a meaningful qualitative objective.
The verb should reveal what you will do with the evidence, not merely make the sentence sound academic.
What should be in a quantitative objective?
Not every objective needs every detail.
But often a strong quantitative objective makes several elements visible:
- population;
- outcome;
- exposure or comparison where relevant;
- time period where relevant;
- type of estimate or relationship.
For example:
To estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms among secondary-school students in [setting] during the 2026 academic year.
Or:
To compare mean attendance rates between students who completed at least five therapy sessions and those who completed fewer sessions.
Or:
To assess the association between household food insecurity and moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms among caregivers.
The objective starts to tell the methods section what it must contain.
What should be in a qualitative objective?
A qualitative objective usually needs clarity about:
- population or perspective;
- phenomenon;
- experience, process or meaning of interest;
- context where relevant.
For example:
To explore how adolescents who completed group psychotherapy describe changes in communication with family members.
That does not need an independent variable and dependent variable.
Trying to force qualitative objectives into quantitative grammar can damage the question.
Bench Check: one objective doing five jobs
You wrote:
To assess knowledge, attitudes, practices, barriers, facilitators and factors associated with contraceptive use among students.
That is not one specific objective.
It is a small research programme held together by commas.
Break it down.
Ask which components are:
- descriptive;
- comparative;
- explanatory;
- qualitative.
Then decide which ones the study genuinely needs.
A long list of objectives does not make the study more complete.
It can make the study incoherent.
Objectives should connect to analysis
Create a simple table before data collection:

If any row has a blank analysis column, stop.
Not because every study needs a statistical test.
Because every objective needs an explicit plan for how evidence will answer it.
Objectives should also connect backward to the research problem
The alignment works in both directions.
Research problem → question → objectives → methods → analysis
If an objective does not contribute to answering the research question, ask why it exists.
Students often add objectives because:
- the questionnaire already contains the variables;
- the supervisor suggested “also look at...”;
- a previous thesis had four objectives;
- the data might be available.
That is not enough.
Each objective creates:
- data requirements;
- sample-size implications;
- analytical work;
- interpretation;
- space in the results and discussion.
Objectives are expensive.
Spend them deliberately.
How many specific objectives should I have?
There is no universal correct number.
Three weak objectives are not better than two coherent ones.
Six objectives may be reasonable in a complex study.
What matters is whether:
- each objective contributes to the overall question;
- the study can realistically answer each one;
- the data and sample support the analyses;
- the project remains feasible.
Do not choose a number because your department likes “three to five.”
Follow institutional requirements where they exist, but preserve conceptual coherence.
Descriptive objective
To estimate the proportion of women aged 15-49 years who received their preferred contraceptive method during their most recent facility visit.
Comparative objective
To compare receipt of a preferred contraceptive method across public, private-not-for-profit and private-for-profit facilities.
Association objective
To assess the association between perceived provider respect and receipt of a preferred contraceptive method.
Qualitative objective
To explore how women describe provider interactions that influenced whether they accepted, changed or declined a contraceptive method.
Notice that the objectives can sit within the same broad research area while asking different kinds of questions.
Take each specific objective in your proposal.
Under it, write:
I will know I have answered this objective when I can show...
Complete the sentence.
If you write:
“...the prevalence and 95% CI”
the objective is quantitative descriptive.
If you write:
“...a comparison between groups”
make the groups visible.
If you write:
“...themes explaining how participants made the decision”
you are describing qualitative evidence.
If you cannot complete the sentence, revise the objective.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a research aim and an objective?
An aim is usually broader and describes the overall purpose. Specific objectives break that purpose into answerable components.
- Should objectives start with “to”?
That is a common convention, but wording conventions vary. Clarity matters more than ritual.
- Can I use “understand” in a research objective?
Yes, particularly in qualitative research, if the phenomenon and type of understanding sought are clear.
- Should every quantitative objective name the dependent variable?
It should make the key outcome or quantity being estimated clear, even if your discipline does not use the phrase “dependent variable.”
- How many objectives should a thesis have?
There is no universal number. Use enough to answer the research question coherently without turning the study into several disconnected projects.
