Every arrow in your conceptual framework needs a job
A practical way to build a clearer framework, plus two research opportunities closing soon.
Welcome to the first Methods Bench newsletter.
Each edition will bring you one practical research lesson, one useful tool, and a short selection of opportunities worth checking.
Start with the outcome
People often begin a conceptual framework by listing every variable connected to their topic. The page fills quickly, while the logic remains difficult to follow.
Try starting with your main outcome. Place it on the right, then work backwards through three questions: What factors influence this outcome most directly? What shapes those direct factors? Which of these relationships will your study actually examine?

Your framework becomes clearer when every box has a purpose and every arrow expresses a relationship you can explain.
Otherwise it is academic spaghetti with impressively tidy boxes.

We have also added a worked example showing the determinants of stunting among children aged 6 to 23 months. It organises the framework into basic determinants, underlying determinants, immediate determinants, and the study outcome.
It also demonstrates how to represent a relationship whose direction cannot be established from cross-sectional data.
Use the structure as a guide, then adapt the variables and relationships to your own research question and study design.
